Interns go to Soft Skills BootCAMP!

Interns exploring the importance of soft skills with ACE MV’s executive director, Alex Bullen Coutts.

In late June, a mixed group of young adults consisting of high school students, college students, and folks out of school participated in a weekend of soft skills trainings at Slough Farm. First of its kind on the Island, BootCAMP weekend included a line up of workshops on professionalism, resiliency, soft skills, financial wellness, and public speaking for interns taught by a group of local and experienced community members.

CAMP! Program Director Sonja Josephson welcomed the group of interns to the program by guiding them through a self-assessment of hard and soft skills that they already possess, followed by an opportunity to highlight areas in which they would like to grow during the program.

The Essentials for Professionalism

Matt Moore, the general manager at Winnetu Oceanside Resort led a powerful presentation on the importance of professionalism, from showing up in proper attire to embodying professional values such as integrity, respect and responsibility, highlighting the impact of etiquette in a professional environment.

Resiliency for Professional Excellence

The interns also had the opportunity to explore the topic of resiliency with Leadership and Business Coach Sharon Strimling. Sharon guided the group through a series of conversations and reflections on resiliency as it relates to professional success, including navigating challenging life circumstances, receiving tough feedback, and using it all to inspire moments of growth.

Financial Wellness

The final day of the weekend was filled with financial know-how, from budgeting to financial goal-setting, led by Financial Educator Chris Edgerly. The interns explored their money mindset, including the beliefs they held around their personal finances, and the connection between lifestyle and financial wellness.

To tie it all up, Laurel Redington, a radio DJ on the local and loved MVY Radio guided the group through an exercise on public speaking (eeek!). Interns had 10 minutes to prepare short stories to share with the rest of the group, practicing their public speaking skills.

Over all, the weekend was a huge success!

Thank you to our sponsors!

A big thank you to Slough Farm for co-sponsoring and hosting this event!
